It looks like Final Fantasy 14 players are the latest victims of hacking attempts. Square Enix is doing what it can to prevent further hacks into accounts, but it’s mostly up to you to make sure your account is secure. If it continues to happen, the company will move towards resetting passwords across the board.

According to Square Enix, both the NA and EU Final Fantasy 14 accounts are targets for hackers at the moment. From what the company can see, these sadists obtain the information from third-party accounts they’ve already breached. For example, they may have discovered them by stealing details from Google Chrome passwords or an online store.

It can be as simple as you using the same email address and passwords for all your accounts. As soon as they hack and find the one, they can see if you have the same credentials for your Final Fantasy 14. There’s even a tweet highlighting the details of the latest attempts.

On the support page linked above, Square Enix recommends some steps you can take to ensure your Final Fantasy 14 account remains secure from these latest attempts. The most obvious step is resetting your password to one you don’t normally use, like a brand-new one. In this way, it’s less likely they’ll be able to access your account.

Secondly, you can activate one-time passwords as a secondary verification. In this way, the hackers won’t be able to access your account even if they have your credentials. You’ll receive a pin to your phone or other devices which they won’t be able to see.

Last week, we saw fake LinkedIn profiles appearing where people were pretending to be from official companies. It looks like these types of people aren’t taking any breaks, and we should probably expect more of this behavior as the silly season approaches.
